Free Edition vs Educational Edition
| Feature | PSCAD Free Edition | PSCAD Educational |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Completely free | Free/Reduced (per university) |
| Node limit | ~14 nodes | Unlimited |
| Commercial use | Not allowed | Educational only |
| Best for | Self-study, tutorials | Thesis, research, university projects |
Step 1 — Create a MyCentre Account
MyCentre is Manitoba Hydro International’s official portal for PSCAD license management. Go to https://mycentre.ca, click Register, use your university or work email, and confirm the activation email.
Step 2 — Download PSCAD V5
After logging into MyCentre, go to Downloads → PSCAD, select PSCAD V5 Free Edition, and download the .exe installer (~500MB).
Step 3 — Install the Fortran Compiler
PSCAD requires a Fortran compiler to run simulations. Download MinGW-w64, select the gfortran component during installation, and add MinGW to your system PATH.
Step 4 — Install PSCAD and Activate
Run the installer and select Free Edition on first launch. For Educational license: go to MyCentre → Licenses → Request Educational License, attach proof of enrollment. MHI approves within 1–3 business days.
Verify Installation
Open PSCAD and run a built-in example like Simple RC Circuit. If it completes without errors, your setup is working. For Fortran issues, verify MinGW is in your Windows PATH and restart PSCAD.
